Typed letter signed (dated 9 August 1945) to Mrs. Katherine R. Bacigalupa, reporting that her husband, Second Lieutenant Charles F. Bacigalupa, Air Corps, who was reported missing in action 8 August 1844, is now presumed dead by the War Department. He was a crew member aboard a B-17 (Flying Fortress) aricraft, which on 8 August 1944 participated in a bombardment mission to a target in the area southeast of Caen, France. HIs aircraft broke apart as a result of enemy anti-aircraft fire, which entered the plane's waist and exploded. The aircraft crashed to the ground and burst into flames at a point some 13 miles east of Vire and 25 miles southwest of Caen.
